Oscar de la Renta Obituary

The Dominican-born De la Renta - who also lived in Spain and France before coming to New York - was among a group of designers that also included Bill Blass and Geoffrey Beene who helped put the U.S. on the map in the late 1960s as a home of serious fashion.
His specialty was elaborate, embroidered eveningwear. First ladies Laura Bush and Hilary Clinton both wore de la Renta gowns to inaugural balls, and Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock wore his work on the red carpet.
De la Renta catered mostly to his socialite friends and neighbors, but eyed more mass appeal with several fragrances and accessories licenses.

Mr. De La Renta designed a bedding collection for Cannon Mills in the late 70's. I was a sales rep for Cannon and had the opportunity to meet him in Cannon's NY showroom several times. He was very approachable, non-pretentious, friendly,and a complete gentleman. He made you feel that you were the most important person in the room. He even remembered my name and insisted that I call him "Oscar."
On one occasion he was wearing a blue suit with brown shoes. I said that I thought brown shoes was a fashion mistake w/ a blue suit. Without skipping a beat he said, "Only after five!" Needless to say, I always wore brown shoes with my blue suit. If someone commented to me I would respond, "If it's good enough for Oscar De La Renta, it's good enough for me."

Unfortunately I was made aware of Oscar de la Renta's work only after his death. I heard his designs were incredible. Being that I'm a lover of fashion, this greatly impressed me. It also made me think of the scripture at Ecclesiastes 9:10, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do with all your might..." No doubt he did this, doing what he enjoyed!

I absolutely loved his style and talent. Totally shocked as he was my favorite designer. He was the greatest elegant hands down fashion designer in the world. His dresses we're the best. It is a crying shame to lose a great fashion designer, and Oscar was one of the best! It was sad to lose Geoffrey Beene, Yves Saint Laurent, and countless others. I still have my Oscar perfume, eye glasses, and other assorted goodies. He will be terribly missed but I'll bet he's giving the Good Lord and his Son, some fashion updating. I am so saddened to hear of Oscar's passing. I had expected his influence on style to continue in my life as if it was a given that we would always enjoy his best, which was of course, the most sublime. His were the most beautiful designs that managed to celebrate the beauty in all of us.
There will never be an equal in his translation of sensual hues on brilliantly constructed garments of both everyday wear and the sublime couture of his unforgettable creations.
As a 58 year old woman who likes to keep at my best, I continue to remain stylish within my budget and can say that although I never could afford designer clothes, that Oscar de la Renta has been a huge influence and inspiration to me over many years of following fashion.
I am saddened by his passing and with great respect, offer my most sincere condolences to his loved ones. My thoughts are with all who held him dear.

I first met Mr. D. in 550 7th Ave in 1981
and was introduced to him by his employee Murray M. Over the past 30 plus years I came to know him and learned quite a lot from him. I found him to be remarkably humble and witty.
But most striking was his genuine kindness. He was a very nice man and I am glad I knew him as I did.
